The vision of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to elevate the influence of women in the world. The purpose of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to cultivate friendship among members who are known for their character and concern for others. Locally, Delta Nu-A has supported organizations such as Big Brother Big Sisters, The Humane Society, The American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, The American Diabetes Association, and many soup kitchens in the Flint area. Nationally, Alpha Sigma Alpha supports the Special Olympics and Girls on the Run. The sisters of ASA are also very involved on campus, from holding social events to being members and officers of various organizations, such as Kettering Student Government, the Society of Women Engineers, the Robot Honor Society, various honor societies and many others.Īlpha Sigma Alpha Delta Nu-A chapter has strong philanthropic roots. We pride ourselves in making school a top priority. As members of ASA, we strive to uphold a balance between these four aims in our everyday lives. After much searching, we have firmly rooted ourselves in the historical home with the red door on 6th street near Mott Community College.Īlpha Sigma Alpha is founded on four aims: intellectual, physical, spiritual, and social. Throughout the years we have moved from place to place looking for somewhere to call home. Today, there are 15 active members of Alpha Sigma Alpha Delta Nu-A. After two years of development, we received our charter on May 10th, 1975 with 8 founding members. Thus, responsive to this thinking, Sigma Alpha Mu at its 1953 Convention amended its constitution, making eligible for membership any male student of good moral character who respects the ideals and traditions of the Fraternity. When Alpha Sigma Alpha first laid roots at GMI in October of 1973, their vision was to help develop women who have strong connections to the four aims of Alpha Sigma Alpha: spiritual, social, intellectual, and physical. ![]() With the advent of the mid-twentieth century, expressions of liberalism suggested that constitutional limitations of membership to any particular religious group were not in keeping with the ideals of democracy which had always been part of the Fraternity’s creed. Sigma Alpha Mu has always acknowledged with a deep appreciation of its Jewish heritage and the ethical values of Judaism which have enriched its life and the lives of its members. They believed in fraternalism among Jewish college men, convinced that without it, a large number of Jewish students would be deprived of the pleasant associations and companionships they now find in most colleges. The eight Founders of Sigma Alpha Mu were all of the Jewish faith, and it naturally followed that they attracted to their brotherhood men of similar background. This proposal was accepted and the meeting was adjourned. During this meeting, it was suggested that the Greek Letters “Kappa Phi Omega” be used to symbolize the words “Cosmic Fraternal Order” as the new name for the fraternity. The men discovered that they shared values and the inspiration for the formation of a new fraternity came to them. During the discussion which took place, much loftier ideals were expressed than the mere formulation of plans for asserting sophomore honor. It is interesting to note that while there were many friends among the eight, none of them knew all the others. These men are the Founders of Sigma Alpha Mu. Class Marshal Lester Cole called a meeting of sophomore leaders on November 26, 1909, to decide on a plan for redemption. In the fall of 1909, the sophomore class at the College of the City of New York had found itself embarrassed by “lowly freshmen.” At a school where “warfare” between freshman and sophomore class was a tradition, the sophomores found it necessary to regain their fallen honor. ![]()
